Two-game ban for Werder´s Djilobodji

Papy Djilobodji has been handed a two-game ban for unsportsmanlike conduct after making a throat-slitting gesture in Werder Bremen s 1-1 draw with Mainz on Saturday.

The 27-year-old, on loan at Werder from Chelsea, made the signal at a grounded Pablo de Blasis after battling for possession with the attacker during the Bundesliga clash.

A three-match suspension for the Chelsea loanee had initially been proposed by the German Football Association (DFB) a similar sanction to that of St Pauli s Deniz Naki for making the gesture toward Hansa Rostock fans in 2009 but Werder appealed Tuesday s ruling.

Bremen s appeal has been partially successful, but they will nonetheless be without the centre-back in their upcoming games.

The DFB disciplinary board has hand…

Barcelona president Laporta wants ´open´ Super League, not closed shop

Barcelona chief Joan Laporta is not a fan of the original plans for a European Super League, even though his club have stood by the proposal.

Along with 11 other European heavyweights, Barca attempted to form a breakaway competition in April 2021.

However, nine of the 12 teams withdrew due to the unpopularity of the proposals, with UEFA s reaction particularly strong.

The sides nevertheless avoided any meaningful punishment and three clubs – Barca, Real Madrid and Juventus – remain committed to a Super League.

However, Laporta, who succeeded Josep Maria Bartomeu as Barca president in March of last year, does not believe a closed-shop Super League would be the correct way to go.

Indeed, Laporta believes keeping alive the chance of smaller teams…

Inter 3-0 Milan: Martinez double fires Nerazzurri into Coppa Italia final

Lautaro Martinez s superb double fired Inter into the Coppa Italia final against Milan on Tuesday, as they ran out 3-0 victors at San Siro.

The Argentina international kept the Nerazzurri on course for a potential domestic double, after a goalless first leg last month set up a winner-takes-all clash this week.

With the Supercoppa Italia already secured against Juventus and Milan merely two points ahead with a game out of hand, Inter could yet complete a clean sweep of domestic honours.

Simone Inzaghi claimed a maiden Derby della Madonnina win with the result, and his side will now wait to discover if they face holders Juventus or Fiorentina.

With defeat leaving Stefano Pioli and his side with just the Scudetto left to fight for, though, the stage is…

Minamino joins Liverpool: How versatile January addition compares to Firmino, Mane and Salah

Takumi Minamino is officially a Liverpool player. A transfer story that broke suddenly has been wrapped up well before Christmas, let alone the January window opening.

The Reds had barely touched down after playing Salzburg in the Champions League when journalists in the know began reporting a potential deal. Within hours, the Austrian club officially confirmed negotiations were taking place after a reported £7.25million release clause was met.

Liverpool saw what the Japan international can offer during the two games between the teams in Europe.

Indeed, Minamino has already scored at Anfield, finding the net in a 4-3 loss back in October. There is a video on Twitter of Jurgen Klopp nodding his head approvingly at that goal, cheekily suggesting he knew all alon…

Signings at Spurs? Vardy at the Euros? What Tottenham and England can do to cope without Kane

Harry Kane is not expected to return to training until April in a huge blow to both Tottenham and England.

The Spurs striker suffered a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring in the Premier League defeat to Southampton this month, and the club confirmed on Thursday he would undergo surgery.

The latest estimate for Kane s lay-off should concern Tottenham fans, with the team sixth and six points off a Champions League place, while England manager Gareth Southgate will also be worried as Euro 2020 approaches.

So, will Spurs stick or twist in the transfer market? And does Southgate have an alternative to his talismanic captain?

6 In the last six Premier League matches that Harry Kane has played no part in for Tottenham Hotspur, they have picked up just five po…

Tuesday s last-gasp draw at home to Everton their ninth at the Theatre of Dreams this season and 12th overall in the Premier League left United si…

Barcelona wait it out over Neymar

According to a recent report from AS, Barcelona club president Joseph Maria Bartomeu has not kickstarted negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over any kind of deal for Neymar. The belief is that they are confident Real Madrid aren’t interested in trying to bring him in anymore, meaning they will be able to take their good sweet time before making an effort to sign the Brazilian.

Neymar’s future has been uncertain for quite some time now, with the man himself indicating over the summer that he would be intrigued by the possibility of a return to the Nou Camp.

His first spell with the club didn’t exactly end perfectly but when you consider just how talented he is, we can’t imagine Barca fans will care too much if they do manage to bring him back.
